Phinisi Price Guide: What a Pinisi Costs

A pinisi costs anywhere from USD 80K for an unconverted cargo hull to USD 6.8M+ for a flagship yacht-grade build — and the honest answer for any specific vessel is a band, not a number, set by size, age, class and refit state. This guide publishes the bands we actually see in transactions and current asking prices, how new-build pricing compares with used, and how the survey reshapes the final figure. It is the pricing spine of this site: every desk from boat-grade hulls to yacht-grade vessels links back here.

  • Bands reflect recent asking prices and completed transactions across Bali, Labuan Bajo, Sulawesi and Jakarta. Individual vessels sit inside their band according to age, engine hours, certificate status and refit history — and Bali-listed vessels carry a 15–25% location premium a negotiator should test.

What Moves a Vessel Within Its Band

Refit recency (±20%)

A documented major refit inside 3 years justifies the top of band; none in 8+ years argues the bottom.

Engine make and hours (±10–15%)

A mainstream marine diesel with service records versus a truck-conversion engine of uncertain hours.

Paper completeness (±10%)

Current certificates, clean title, measurement papers matching the vessel. Paper problems are price problems.

Charter track record

Verified earnings history supports pricing above the physical-asset band — the vessel is part business; see the charter yield model.

New Build vs Used: The Real Comparison

A new 30–35 m charter-compliant build from a reputable Sulawesi yard prices at roughly USD 700K–1.5M depending on spec (about USD 25K–45K per metre boat-grade, USD 60K–90K+ per metre yacht-grade), and takes 24–30 months. The used equivalent costs 30–50% less and earns immediately — but carries its history with it. The break-even question is works: a used vessel needing a USD 300K refit within two years has spent its price advantage. Component-level build costs are broken down in our Indonesian-language guides to build budgeting and component costs, and commissioning mechanics on the new-build page.

How the Survey Reshapes the Number

Across our buy-side files, the pattern is consistent: survey findings on used phinisi support price adjustments of 5–20% of asking. The mechanism matters — findings priced with yard quotes and presented as a works schedule succeed; vague “the survey found issues” requests fail. On new builds, the pre-delivery snag list converts into retention money instead. Either way, never negotiate the second round without paper; the survey and due diligence protocol is built to produce exactly that paper.

Total Cost of Ownership, Briefly

Purchase price is the entry fee, not the cost. Plan 8–12% of purchase price in one-time transaction costs (survey, legal, escrow, flag and registration), then 10–15% of vessel value per year in crew, maintenance, insurance, berth and certificates for an actively used vessel. Ownership economics get their own treatment on the operating economics deep-dive.

Using This Guide in a Live Negotiation

Bands become leverage when used in sequence: open by placing the vessel in her band with reasons (size, class, refit year), let the survey move her within it, and close on works-adjusted arithmetic the seller can check. Sellers argue with adjectives; they concede to columns of numbers.

Numbers settle only half a deal. The search-to-handover acquisition mandate sequences survey, legal and handover so a fair price becomes a safe closing.

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How much does a phinisi cost per metre to build new?

Boat-grade builds from Sulawesi yards run about USD 25K–45K per metre LOA complete; yacht-grade builds with designed interiors, class-standard systems and supervision run USD 60K–90K+ per metre. The spread within each range is mostly interior fit-out and systems depth, not hull timber.

02

Why do two phinisi of the same size have wildly different prices?

Because size is the weakest predictor. Refit recency, engine provenance, certificate status, charter history and build quality each move price by double-digit percentages. A 30 m vessel at USD 400K and another at USD 1.4M can both be fairly priced — they are different products sharing a hull length.
