Eight Bira Shipyards Building Phinisi Yachts in 2026

South Sulawesi has built phinisi schooners by hand since the 14th century. Eight active shipyards we vet and work with for buyer-side new-build commissioning. UNESCO inscribed phinisi shipbuilding on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2017.

Bira and Tana Beru phinisi shipyards are concentrated in two adjacent villages on the southeast tip of South Sulawesi, where hand-built phinisi yachts have been constructed since the 14th-century Bugis-Makassar maritime empire. Eight active yards we vet and recommend: Konjo Boatbuilders, Hadji Kalla Phinisi, Cv. Lambo, Bira Heritage, Tana Beru Maritim, Konjo II, Anugerah, and Ammana Gappa.

Geography: Where the Shipyards Are

Bira and Tana Beru are two adjacent villages on the southeast tip of South Sulawesi, approximately 200km southeast of Makassar. Bira is the larger of the two, with formal yard infrastructure and master shipwright lineage from the Konjo, Bugis, and Makassar communities. Tana Beru is smaller, more village-scale, with hereditary shipwright families building phinisi continuously for over 700 years.

Access from Bali requires either a domestic flight Makassar-Bulukumba (1.5 hours) plus 1.5 hours ground transport, or domestic flight Makassar plus 4 hours ground transport. Most of our buyers visit during inspection trip stage; ongoing build oversight typically uses combination of in-person visits (every 2 months) and weekly written progress reports plus photographs.

Konjo Boatbuilders — Premium Superyacht Specialist

Konjo is the most well-known Bira yard in international yacht-charter circles. They built Lamima (65m, launched 2014, current charter rate USD 240,000/week), Aliikai (43m, launched 2010), and several other notable charter phinisi. Capacity 2 hulls per year. Build time 14-18 months. Specialty 45-65m superyacht builds with premium interior finish. We work with Konjo for buyers commissioning USD 4M+ projects where build quality and provenance matter most.

Hadji Kalla Phinisi — Luxury Charter Standard

Hadji Kalla is the highest-volume luxury charter phinisi yard, building approximately 4-5 hulls per year in the 40-55m range. Build time 10-14 months. Standard build quality is professional charter grade, with optional upgrades for premium specification. Most cost-efficient route to a charter-ready vessel without sacrificing build quality.

Cv. Lambo — Mid-Tier Fast Turnaround

Cv. Lambo specialises in 35-45m phinisi for buyers prioritising shorter build time and lower cost basis. Capacity 6-8 hulls per year. Build time 8-12 months. Standard build quality is solid working-yacht grade, with finish upgrades available for charter-tier specification. Good fit for charter operators expanding fleet quickly or buyers commissioning their first phinisi at moderate budget.

Bira Heritage — Traditional Construction

Bira Heritage focuses on traditional construction methods preserving pre-2017 shipwright techniques. 38-50m range. Capacity 3 hulls per year. Build time 12-16 months. Premium for buyers prioritising authentic heritage construction over modern shortcuts.

Tana Beru Maritim — Refit + New-Build Hybrid

Tana Beru Maritim runs both new-build and refit operations from the same facility. 35-50m new-build range plus refit capacity for 35-55m vessels. Capacity 4 hulls per year combined. Useful for buyers considering new-build vs refit candidate decision.

Konjo II — Owner-Direct Cost-Optimised

Konjo II is a satellite yard from the Konjo group focused on cost-optimised builds for owner-direct operators. 32-42m range. Capacity 3-4 hulls per year. Build time 8-12 months. Best fit for small-fleet operators or private buyers prioritising acquisition economics.

Anugerah — Charter-Fleet Specification

Anugerah specialises in standardised charter-fleet specification builds for established charter operators. 38-48m range. Capacity 4 hulls per year. Build time 10-14 months. Specification largely standardised which supports faster build, easier crew training, and more efficient maintenance across multi-hull operations.

Ammana Gappa — Boutique + Tender Builds

Ammana Gappa is the boutique yard. Smaller volume, high attention to detail, also builds tenders for larger vessels. 32-40m phinisi range plus 6-12m tender capacity. Capacity 2 hulls per year. Build time 10-14 months.

Quality Inspection Protocol

Phinisi build quality varies meaningfully across yards and across hulls within the same yard. Our quality inspection protocol covers hull material verification (ironwood — Eusideroxylon zwageri — for keel and primary structural members; iron plus brass fasteners; teak deck planking; mahogany or merbau interior trim), construction technique verification (traditional joinery methods, no shortcut wood-glue joints in structural members), seasoning verification (wood properly seasoned 6-12 months before construction; we sample-test moisture content), fastener verification (galvanised iron or brass throughout; no carbon steel that would corrode in salt water), and sea trial performance verification.

How do I choose between the eight Bira shipyards?

Match yard to project priorities. Premium superyacht (USD 4M+) → Konjo Boatbuilders. Charter standard (USD 2-4M) → Hadji Kalla. Cost-optimised mid-tier (USD 1.5-2.5M) → Cv. Lambo or Konjo II. Authentic traditional construction → Bira Heritage. Refit + new-build hybrid → Tana Beru Maritim. Standardised charter fleet → Anugerah. Boutique + tender combination → Ammana Gappa. We discuss yard selection in detail during buyer engagement memo phase.

Can I visit the yards before committing to a build contract?

Yes — yard visits are part of standard inspection trip protocol. We arrange 2-day Bira/Tana Beru visit covering all 8 yards if requested, or focused visit to 2-3 yards matching your project profile. Yard visit gives you direct meetings with master shipwrights, walks through active builds at various stages, and lets you assess construction quality firsthand. Most buyers find yard visits decisive in yard selection.

The enduring art of phinisi craftsmanship

The rhythmic tap of mallets against seasoned timber echoes through the humid air of Bira, a symphony of ancient craft in motion. Here, the shipbuilding traditions of the Bugis and Makassarese people continue, passed down through generations without formal blueprints, relying instead on inherited knowledge and an intuitive understanding of the sea. Each phinisi is a testament to natural materials, primarily robust ironwood (kayu ulin) for the keel and ribs, and resilient teak for the decking and superstructure, meticulously sourced from sustainable forests across the archipelago. This deep connection to the land and sea imbues every vessel with a unique soul.

The construction process is a spiritual journey as much as an engineering feat. From the initial keel-laying ceremony, where offerings are made for a safe and prosperous life at sea, to the precise shaping of each plank, the master shipwrights (panrita lopi) guide their teams with an expertise honed over centuries. These artisans possess an extraordinary ability to visualize the complex curves and lines of the hull, ensuring hydrodynamic efficiency and unparalleled seaworthiness. It’s a living heritage, a tangible link to a maritime past that continues to sail boldly into the future. For more on this remarkable tradition, explore its UNESCO-recognized status.
