For the electrical plant: voltage and frequency under load per generator, and switchover behaviour. For steering: wheel turns lock-to-lock and any play. For the hull: bilge intake per hour under way versus at rest — some weep is normal for a working timber hull; a trend is a finding. Photograph the gauge panel at each stage; timestamped images end arguments later. Genuine deal-breakers are rarer than buyers fear, and they cluster: an engine that cannot reach rated RPM under load combined with low oil pressure hot (tired core, not a tune-up); structural movement visible at the mast step or persistent unexplained bilge inflow that trends upward through the trial; steering play beyond adjustment tolerance in the gear itself. Almost everything else — a genset that hunts under load, exhaust temperature high on one cylinder, worn running rigging, an autopilot that wanders — is repricing ammunition: get yard quotes, convert the list into a works schedule, and reopen the number as covered in the used-hull buying playbook. The discipline is refusing to let either side blur the categories: sellers will call structural findings “cosmetic”; nervous buyers will call cosmetic findings “structural”. The log sheet, not the loudest voice, decides which is which.
Reading the Crew During the Trial
The trial’s most underrated instrument is the existing crew. Watch where the engineer stands and what he glances at repeatedly — crews telegraph their vessel’s weak points unconsciously. Ask the captain to demonstrate the anchor windlass and the emergency tiller himself rather than narrating; competence and hesitation are both findings. And note what nobody touches: the genset that stays off, the pump that is “being serviced”. None of this replaces instruments; all of it tells you where to point them for the second hour.
